6 Things We Learned About Sleep in 2016

At Eight, we are working hard on the science behind sleep. We keep up with trends in sleep (even in our sleep), so you don’t have to.

2016 was a historic year, and while looking back on all the happenings we decided to see how those ups and downs affected our sleep.

This year:

  • Women were tired, clocking on average 24 more minutes of sleep a night than men.
  • The average number of hours of sleep we got was pretty impressive: 7 hours and 38 minutes per night – nearly the recommended eight hours.
  • We lost sleep the day after, not the day before, the U.S. election.
  • Tryptophan got us again; we clocked 29 minutes more sleep than average on Thanksgiving.


Rest assured, we’ll be tracking all of the interesting trends in sleep as they happen in 2017.
